Entity information: Usukh Bayan Sureg LLC specializes in consultancy services for intensified livestock production technology. Moreover, the company provides services for dairy milk care and herding technology, registrations of milking cows, assessing milk production, embryo transplantation in lactating cows, and artificial insemination of cows using traditional biotechnological methods.
Partner entity: Metropolitan Agricultural Department and the National Center for Livestock Genetic Resources of MOFALI.
Project objective: To supply herders and farmers with qualifying heifers by breeding dairy calves and yearlings bought from farmers and herders with a good nutrition program and intended care. The productivity of dairy heifers will be improved twice, increasing the benefits of herders and farmers in the same manner. With the establishment of an organized business of supplying heifers and bulls, herders will no longer need to herd young calves and yearlings besides feeding the milking cows, by having the necessary flock provided by the breeding complex.
Planned activities: The farm will raise heifers qualifying for dairy production from calves and yearlings of good breeds bought from herders and farmers in the breeding complex with a nutritious feeding program and sell dairy heifers back to herders and farmers.
Proposed solutions: Currently, in Mongolia, there are no breeding complexes that raise dairy heifers; on the other hand, the milk productivity and quality degradation are caused by the lack of focus on breeding and selection of cattle at dairy farms; instead the farmers use any available bulls for insemination. Due to this circumstance, the dairy farms surrounding the municipality are stagnated, without much growth and struggling to make ends meet. Our project will significantly contribute to eliminating this situation by establishing a new type of farm business and creating conditions for breeding with a good nutrition program. As a result, the productivity of the dairy cattle will improve by 30-40 percent, and consequently, the dairy farmers' and herders' revenue is expected to increase at the same rate.
Project beneficiaries: The direct beneficiaries of the project are herders and farmers operating the dairy cattle businesses within the proximity of the capital city. The majority of the dairy farms are located within the 21st khoroo of the Songinokhairkhan district and the 13th khoroo of the Khan-Uul district, and 97.7% of cattle are dairy cows. There are 184 farmer households in these khoroos, and over 900 people will directly benefit from the project. Moreover, the number of indirect beneficiaries is unlimited.
Project location: The intensified dairy businesses within the proximity of the capital city and 21st khoroo of the Songinokhairkhan district and 12th and 13th khoroos of the Khan-Uul district, Ulaanbaatar city.
