Institute of Chemistry and Chemical Technology, MAS
Project name: Production Technology of nutritious feed using flock cud
Entity information: The Institute of Chemistry and Chemical Technology of the Academy of Sciences of Mongolia was established first in 1961, and it operates with 12 departments. The institute focuses on research, development, and experimentation works to identify chemical and physical properties of raw materials such as mineral, fossil fuel, oil and animal, plant, and raw materials of microbic origin and streamline production technologies; reduction of environmental pollution; processing and recycling of waste and by-product; and development of new materials. The institute has 128 scientific researchers and staff.
Project objective: To develop a production technology of a new type of feed with compact dimensions using animal cud and enable opportunities of protecting the livestock from provisional natural disasters.
Planned activities:
- Develop a production technology of a tablet for livestock feed from animal cud waste from the slaughterhouses enriched with mineral salt, bioactive proteins, and peptide, and experiment its results on livestock for further assessment
- Organize training amongst the herders on methods of feed production using the cud and promote its uses
- Estimate the amount of methane, carbon, and nitrogen gas emission generated from the cud waste
Proposed solutions:
- The cud waste generated during the slaughtering period largely pollutes the environment. Since animal cud contains nutrition-rich contents usable for animal feed, it is seen as a potential raw material for producing animal feed tablets enriched with bio-active substances. The tablet form enables the production of feed in compact dimensions, is easy to transport during the snowy period of dzud, and increases the nutritional properties of the fodder. The project entity is fully capable of independently developing technologies for primary processing of cud and extracting additional protein and peptides to produce feed, experiment, and test. It is required to procure dehydration equipment, crusher, mixer, and tablet pressing equipment. The feed toxicity and safety indicators analysis and conclusions will be conducted by corresponding professional entities.
Beneficiaries: The herders of remote areas faced with severe winters and lack of fodder will be able to obtain compact-sized yet nutritious feed sources. By reducing the waste amount generated from the slaughtering process, the project will impact the reduction of soil, air, and soil water pollution and further impact the emissions of greenhouse gasses. Therefore, the project will improve the quality of life and health of residents within the surrounding areas of slaughterhouses. Moreover, it will enable an opportunity to establish feed production workshops using animal cud and create new workplaces.
